A gem twinkling brightly in the crown of Livingston Parish is the city of Denham Springs. Even though the city is more than 12 miles east of downtown Baton Rouge, it’s still considered part of the Baton Rouge Metropolitan Statistical Area.
As Livingston Parish’s leader in residential and commercial development, Denham Springs is the only municipality within the parish to be officially classified as a city.
The population of Denham Springs has grown steadily yet conservatively over the years, from 8,381 in 1990, to 10,303 in 2008. This constant expansion, however, has not destroyed the city’s charming, small-town look and feel. Its happy residents get the benefits of both urban convenience and rural serenity.
Shopping and Dining
There are some obvious advantages to living in a large urban area, mainly by way of increased choices not only shopping and dining, but also schools, employment opportunities and close proximity to healthcare services.
Unlike many other cities of its size, Denham Springs has these big city advantages, but it also offers several of its own. The downtown area of Denham Springs is a good example of this. In recent years, it has changed from a relatively sleepy place, populated mainly by doctor’s offices and hardware stores, to a vibrant community centerpiece, focusing on antiques and collectibles called Antique Village.
Antique Village plays host to a Mardi Gras Parade two weeks prior to Mardi Gras, as well as Springfest on the last Saturday in April and other festivals.
Parks and Recreation
Denham Springs is alive with natural beauty and open spaces. The city’s Parks and Recreation Department maintains the neighborhood parks within Denham Springs, including the gorgeously landscaped Train Station Park; the 11-acre L.M. Lockhart Park, which features an air-conditioned community center, playground for the kids, and a walking track; and Spring Park, with its giant oak trees, picnic and event pavilion and nearby Amite River.
Living
The Denham Springs community incorporates a nice blend of long-established neighborhoods and newly developed ones.
Residents of Denham Springs have a number of reasons to brag about their hometown, not the least of which is the annual Spring and Fall Festivals put on by the Historic Preservation District and Train Station Park. These merry celebrations typically include live music, artisans and crafters, and a pet costume and talent contest.
The city has also received national recognition in the form of being designated as an official “Tree City,” as well as “Main Street, USA Community.”
Some of the nation’s biggest retailers, like Sam’s Club, Home Depot and Bass Pro Shops, have established outlets in the Denham Springs area, bringing employment opportunities, additional businesses and revenue.
Schools, Health, Transportation
The Livingston Parish Public School System serves the educational needs of Denham Springs. It operates eight elementary schools, two middle schools and a pair of high schools. Southland Christian Academy is a private school located in Livingston Parish.
Hospitals and medical centers in the Denham Springs area include the Ochsner Medical Center, Woman’s Hospital and the Earl K. Long Medical Center.
Another benefit of Denham Springs’ small size is that it’s relatively easy to get around town on your own. It is also very close to I-10 and I-12, which provide fast commuting to New Orleans and Baton Rouge.
The Baton Rouge Metropolitan Airport offers regional flights to several southern cities, such as Memphis, Dallas-Ft. Worth, Atlanta and Houston.
