Zachary is a city in East Baton Rouge Parish, containing about 15,000 residents. According to the City of Zachary website, the Zachary Independent School District has been ranked No. 1 in the state of Louisiana each year from 2003 to 2010.

Parks and Recreation

Those who enjoy sports, outdoor recreation and leisure activities will no doubt fall in love with Zachary.

Many of the parks and recreational facilities are designed to accommodate a wide array of active and passive activities. For example, the Zachary Youth Park incorporates several features and amenities, such as baseball, softball and football facilities, two soccer fields and an 880-yard (half-mile) walking track.

Also, as part of the East Baton Rouge Parish, Zachary and its residents have convenient access to all of the features, facilities and services offered by the Recreation and Park Commission for the Parish of East Baton Rouge or BREC, including the Baton Rouge Zoo, several public golf courses and myriad summer day camps.

Nestled in a lovely green pocket about 14 miles north of the lively downtown area of Baton Rouge and a short drive east of the mighty Mississippi River, Zachary offers what other towns its size can only hope to aspire to: all of the benefits of an urban community, combined with all of the serenity and security of a rural community.

Over the years, Zachary has grown from a somewhat stereotypical rural community into a vibrant, young, small city, with a second-to-none school system, a wide variety of retail outlets, outstanding healthcare facilities and excellent employment opportunities. Some of the major employers in the area include the Entergy Power Plant, Georgia-Pacific and ExxonMobil.

Another phenomenal feature of life in Zachary is Lane Regional Medical Center, the ultra-modern, state-of-the-art healthcare facility. Other nearby medical centers are the Villa Feliciana Medical Complex and Earl K. Long Medical Center.

Its relatively small size makes Zachary an easy town in which to get around. Most folks who live in Zachary commute alone in their cars or trucks, but some carpool as well. Some other transportation options are available in nearby Baton Rouge, such as Interstate 12, Amtrak and the Capital Area Transit (Bus) System (CATS).
